  • Essay / The negative effects of longer school days - 2037

Many American schools are now considering having a longer schedule. However, having a longer schedule has more negatives than positives. Most parents already have a personalized schedule that matches the traditional school schedule. Changing school arrangements can affect parents’ optimized daily routines. Parents should make major changes to their work schedules. Vacations are shortened, which reduces the duration of family ties. High school students reportedly have conflicts with summer jobs. They will not need the entire summer off and will only be able to work during short breaks during the school year. In order for some schools to change their schedules, school bus transportation and other costs must be considered. Dropout rates may increase the longer they stay in school. They may experience extreme fatigue and ultimately avoid going to school. If schools operate longer, they will require much more maintenance. The one-year schedule would interfere with critical maintenance issues and participation in these issues will need to be done while students and staff members are in school. Although student achievement would likely increase, there is no need to expand school schedules because operating costs would increase, parents' schedules would be affected as well as industries that favor a traditional school schedule. Parents will need to make major adjustments to their schedules if school schedules convert to a much longer duration. Meanwhile, students will end up feeling tired after a long day.
