The Iroquois Indians finally reclaimed much of their land. Throughout American history, Native Americans were discriminated against by whites. They were forced to live on reservations, deprived of their freedom. They were forced to send their children to residential schools. They couldn't vote. They could not marry white people (Shepherd). They were victims of hate crimes. Their reservations were dumps, the Navajo reservation was a series of 1,100 abandoned uranium mines and nuclear test sites, apparently exempt from the environmental protection that exists outside the reservation (Schaefer, 170). Given the Native Americans' commitment to the land, this injustice must have been particularly bitter. Other manifestations seen among white-black racism include segregation and slavery, neither of which are seen among Indians. Instead, Americans repeatedly made formal attempts to assimilate Native Americans, including the Allotment Act, Indian Reorganization Act, Employment Assistance Program, Termination Act, missionaries, and schools on BIA reservations (Schaefer, 171). Racism was evident in policies passed forcing Native American children to attend boarding schools. The Americans speculated that they could separate them from their parents and “kill the Indian…to save the man” (Johansen). Schools would also play a role in the loss of the Native American language (Johansen). Unlike the racial segregation experienced by black people, Native Americans were forced to integrate and assimilate while abandoning all traditions, from spiritual and linguistic beliefs to health. and self-government (Johansen).
