Scott Fitzgerald saw this as a societal problem and wrote The Great Gatsby to show it. The Great Gatsby attempted to warn society during the 1920s, persuade them to make fundamental changes, and ultimately the novel helped change the concept of American identity. Fitzgerald's novel was written to show people in the 1920s that their obsession with wealth and exuberance was causing several problems in their society. In the book, everyone seems to be judged solely on their place in society and the amount of wealth they have obtained, rather than their character.
