  • Essay / The Importance of Professional Communication Skills

Being able to communicate effectively in a professional manner is vital in most, if not all, career paths. This statement raises important questions. Do potential employers really care about a candidate's communication skills? How will I use my communication skills in my own career? How has college improved my own professional communication skills? Understanding how to communicate professionally can help people in their careers and I believe improving my own communication skills will benefit me now and in the future. Susan Adams and Kyle Weins have both written articles on the importance of using good grammar in the workplace. . Each article gives many compelling reasons why this is a good practice. The first reason for Susan Adams' article is how others would perceive someone who uses poor grammar. She points out that a person's image can be damaged when they have poor speaking habits; therefore, their opportunities for career advancement may be limited. Second, it shows how poor grammar could lead a manager to view an employee as disorganized or incapable of performing more advanced tasks. Finally, she points out that a person who has poor speaking habits could be perceived as not having a good command of the subject they are speaking about (Adams). Kyle Weins' article also makes some important points about bad grammar in the workplace. First, it shows that in today's world, people's intelligence is judged by what they say or what they type. The second point concerns how a manager might perceive someone with poor grammar. A manager might view an employee who uses poor grammar as someone who has trouble concentrating on tasks and doesn't pay attention to details. Finally, it shows that people's effectiveness in working in a group atmosphere also improved due to the various assignments involving a team of people working together. Finally, my reading skills have also improved; I am able to discern an author's intentions and main ideas much more effectively, retain and remember more of the information I read, and concentrate better on reading assignments. All of these skills are essential to maintaining professional communication skills for my career. Communicating effectively and professionally is not only important in how others perceive us; this could determine what jobs we can get, as employer Kevin Weins pointed out. Everyone can benefit from trying to communicate more effectively. Trying to improve my own communication skills has helped me in my own life and career and can help other people in their own careers and daily lives..
