  • Essay / Destiny or free will in Othello by William Shakespeare

Are the characters governed by fate or free will? Fate refers to a power that some people believe causes and controls all events, so you cannot change or control how things will happen. Free will means the ability to decide what to do independent of any outside influence. The difference between the two justifies the causes that are in someone else's hands or in your own hands. The reason I chose the general information that supports my hook is that life can be influenced by the outcome of what you do, regardless of what is in your favor. The characters and events in the play were influenced by fate as the path and actions they chose recently reflect what happens later in the play. The beginning of the play begins when Iago and Roderigo were discussing their plan of Iago wants to be the second. in charge and Roderigo wants to make love with Desdemona. Then they argued with Desdemona's father over Othello's marriage to Desdemona. When Othello married Desdemona, Iago's first plan was to make Cassio lose his job by getting drunk and fighting. Next, Desdemona tries to convince Othello to return Cassio's work. Then Iago traps Desdemona, Othello, Cassio and Bianca in a situation where they wonder who is cheating on what, the handkerchief and Cassio's work. Later, Iago had trouble with the evidence that reveals everything that is really happening in the room. Finally, Othello committed suicide, Iago was imprisoned under torture, Emilia later died, and Cassio became governor of Cyprus. The first meaning of free will in the play is the ability to act at one's own discretion. Duke: “If goodness is beautiful; your son-in-law is handsome, not black. The reason I chose this quote is because Duke has... middle of paper... choices in his favor. The examples show that Iago took their free will and used it as an advantage to carry out his plans. Throughout the essay, the characters were mainly influenced by fate as Iago took advantage of the character's freedom to make choices. He had made his plans and knew what to do and how to do them. The term destiny is related to the play where Iago was seen as the outside force that decided what he had planned in advance so that he could simply ask the characters to do what he had set up so that There is no control over the situation the other characters face. . However, Emilia had an advantage because she rather knew what happened with the handkerchief and Desdemona was not cheating to reveal the truth about what was happening in the room. The reason actions support fate is because everything the characters did determined the outcome of the play.
