  • Essay / Are electric vehicles worth it? - 1484

Are electric cars the way of the future? Some would say no because of the pollution caused during vehicle testing and manufacturing. Others would say that switching to electricity would help the environment because there would be less pollution released into the atmosphere. Today, about a third of the country's greenhouse gas emissions come from transportation. Environmental protection is not limited to what comes out of the exhaust of today's modern cars. Due to differing views that electric vehicles are good for climate change, whether or not the government should continue to offer subsidies and incentives for purchasing an electric car remains debatable. These tax incentives can offset the cost of these electric or hybrid cars by making the purchase more attractive and, in the long term, they will reduce the amount of emissions from all transport vehicles and help end this country's dependence with regard to foreign and domestic oil. Although it is argued that tax credits will not help make environmentally friendly cars that will help reduce emissions, some would argue that these incentives only make "green" cars more affordable for people already rich while costing taxpayers more money. The “big picture” must be taken into account when trying to solve a large-scale global problem. According to a Journal of Accountancy article titled Tax Practice Corner (Bonner 2011), it is stated that those who purchase these electric and plug-in hybrid cars may "be eligible for a tax credit ranging from $2,500 to $7,500" ( p.58). . This incentive is supposed to be quite useful when purchasing a vehicle with this innovative technology. Of course, right now it costs...... middle of paper ......
