  • Essay / The Importance of Antibiotics - 1669

Despite the growing evidence that scientists have gathered to support their position that past and present organisms are linked through the mechanisms of evolution, just look around you to see the process in action. In recent years, advances made by scientists in the theory of evolution have revealed discoveries that benefit us, but that can also harm us. Beneficial discoveries give us greater knowledge of our origins of life, but some lead to truth that can lead to death and destruction, because organisms that threaten our health enjoy evolutionary advantages. This threat takes shape in antibiotic resistance in infectious diseases. In just the last few decades, antibiotics have been hailed as the end of all suffering; a medicine that could combat whatever illness afflicted an individual. However, in recent years, scientists around the world have discovered that excessive use of this "wonder drug" can lead to the proliferation of more harmful bacteria. Generally, antibiotics aim to eradicate colonies of bacteria responsible for infectious diseases in the individual. However, unlike our own DNA which contains checkpoints to prevent drastic mutations, bacteria do not have them and produce a wide variety of sets of DNA as they reproduce. Therefore, when bacteria are attacked by an antibiotic, those that are immune to the antibiotic survive and reproduce and pass on the resistant DNA to the next generation. Recently, the medical community has been faced with a significant problem because "the hope of solving this crisis by developing new antibiotics is diminished both by the low rate of discovery of new antibiotics and by the likelihood that pathogens will develop resistance to new antibiotics at the same time. We must use existing antibiotics" (Palmer and Kisho... middle of article ......reationism versus evolution. Ed. Eric Braun. San Diego: Greenhaven Press, 2005. In question. Opposing views in context.
