  • Essay / How does the language in “Medea” and “Hedda Gabler” convey...

Between Medea, a Greek tragedy by Euripedes (484-407), and Hedda Gabler, a play written by the Norwegian Henrick Ibsen (in 1890) there is a small difference in language between the two plays because although they were written at different times and both were translated from their original language into English, they show similar uses of language, such as sarcasm, speeches, lies, figurative language, and vocabulary that expresses the character's personality and emotions, which show how they really feel: anger, unhappiness, resentment, boredom, jealousy, among others. The use of sarcasm is used by the characters in both plays to hide their direct thoughts and emotions. For example, in Medea, every time she speaks to Jason she uses a sarcastic tone that lets us understand her anger and resentment against Jason, she says phrases such as: “I intentionally deceived my father; I left my house; with you I came to Iolcus near Mount Pelion, showing much love and little wisdom” (p 31), and when she speaks, she speaks bitterly to criticize Jason and belittle him, instead of direct insult, as she also does in some sections, she also uses sarcasm to communicate her emotions. When Jason accuses it's her fault, she was left alone. Hedda responds by asking rhetorical questions in a sarcastic tone: “My choice? What have I done? Did I make you my wife and then abandon you? (p. 35). In Hedda Gabler, Hedda is extremely sarcastic when talking to characters like Miss Tesman. In the first scene where Hedda meets Miss Tesman for the first time, she deliberately confuses Miss Tesman's hat with that of the maid (Berte) to irritate Miss Tesman and get a reaction from her, Hedda says after apologizing: “Yes, that’s very nice. Charming." (p. 275). Her tone is false and sarcastic...... middle of paper ......se of Medea) or indirectly (Hedda Gabler) to understand their emotions. Medea uses a lot of language bitter and mean, negative vocabulary and dramatic figurative language Medea prefers to use eloquent and noble vocabulary to manipulate, lie and play games using other characters to get reactions or persuade them to drink, confide in her. secrets, to love her…, to do what she wants them to do The language in each game is very effective in showing their emotions, their rage and even when they are sarcastic or lying, there are. evidence of the emotions they are hiding and what they want to achieve: revenge, power, drama, justice Hedda and Medea are depicted as complicated characters with many emotions, this deepens them and the audience is able to know what. 'they feel and what they are able to do because of their emotions through the language they use..
