    In Shakespeare's play Othello, several incidents occur that describe the purpose of Roderigo's character. If one event is isolated from others, the thematic desire is lost. Only by looking at the events as a whole can we get the real theme. Roderigo is a minor character who plays an essential role in the play. Although Roderigo has very few lines, he plays a crucial role thematically. The play begins with a conversation between Roderigo and Iago. The first lines are significant in that they set the tone and initiate the plot. Roderigo's thematic goal is represented through Iago's manipulation in the lines: "Tush, never tell me!" I take this very badly/ That you, Iago, who got my purse/ As if the strings belonged to you, you should know it. (1.1.1-3). Roderigo learns of the Moor and Desdemona's flight. He questions Iago for the money he gave him to woo Desdemona. These lines show that even before the play begins, Iago greatly influences Roderigo. The relationship and trust between the two characters is evident from the first lines. Iago takes pleasure in influencing people, as his first soliloquy shows: “Thus I always make my fool my purse; for my own knowledge would have to be profaned if I would spend time with such a snipe, but for my sport and profit. (1.3.374-377). Iago states that the only reason he spends time with Roderigo is for his own wealth and pleasure. His plan is to continue making unfulfilled promises to Roderigo. Iago continues to manipulate Roderigo. He convinces him that Desdemona will soon tire of Othello and begin looking for a younger, more handsome man to fulfill her desires. Continuing to rely on Rod... middle of paper ... for the sake of his reputation, Iago persuades Roderigo to kill Cassio. In doing so, Roderigo only hurts the lieutenant. Iago sees his plan collapse and rushes to kill Roderigo. Betrayed by his friend, Roderigo died in pursuit of Desdemona's love. As a minor character, Roderigo has a significant impact on several themes such as manipulation, jealousy, and betrayal. Throughout Shakespeare's drama, Roderigo is manipulated into performing tasks that Iago wants no part of. Roderigo's jealousy of Othello increases as the play progresses. His unending love for Desdemona leads him to his tragic death where he is betrayed by a person he once called his friend. At first glance, a minor character may seem to have an insignificant role, but upon closer inspection, their role may be much more important than first perceived...
