  • Essay / Farce Called Grading - 1131

(Arthur, p. 2) I agree with Lean's point that grading might be unfair and teachers might be biased. Every individual who has attended school can report several incidents of unfairness and unfairness resulting from the grading system, but grading is still considered a necessary and essential part of formal education. However, I disagree with the statement that "undoubtedly the most tyrannical and indefensible is our insistence on attempting to evaluate student performance by means of a system of marks or grades" . (Arthur, p. 1) Lean believes that grades tend to classify students and marginalize those who get lower grades. Certainly, I agree that grades can differ between teachers but that is not necessarily considered a punishment. This could encourage students to work harder and get the grade they deserve. I think the grades would create a sort of discipline and allow them to enjoy the task given to them. Grades reflect the student's performance over the year and their progress over time. I believe that without an academic comparison system, many of them would struggle to achieve academic success. Somewhere in the essay the author agrees that although most teachers strive to be unbiased in their grades, if they are honest with themselves they know they are trying to get the job done.
