  • Essay / Audience for this act in Hamlet by David Tennant

Everyone knows the story of Hamlet: Hamlet's father is killed, Hamlet's mother marries the evil uncle, everyone thinks Hamlet has gone mad , and almost everyone dies in the end. In David Tennant's version of Hamlet, the use of the characters' physical antics, interactions with each other, striking similarities between the characters and the way they dress, changes the way the audience interprets the actions of each character and their contribution to the play as a whole. , which then determines the success of this version of Hamlet. The physical antics displayed by Hamlet and Ophelia are visible throughout the play, which portray these characters as childish and emotionally unstable. The antics displayed by Hamlet give us a better idea of his true character, which is weak, unpredictable and crazy. He jumps around like he's a little kid trying to get his mother's attention. His antics in court show us how fleeting his thoughts are, and it pays homage to the fact that he has lost his mind. Hamlet's antics also include physical contact or proximity, and this behavior is usually shown when he is mad about something, such as when he discovers that he has been spied on by Polonius and Claudius, and gets into Ophelia's personal space (Act 3, scene I). Hamlet's disregard for personal space was very evident when he was called into his mother's room after the play within the play (act 3, scene iv) in which he becomes angry with his mother, about of her marriage to her uncle, who does not. I completely understand why Hamlet has such a vendetta against Claudius. Ophelia also showed a tendency to have physical antics, which took place in the scene just before her death when she sang a song for Gertrude and Claudius, and started running...... middle of paper ......udius wear very formal dresses and suits, but they do not date from a specific period, an example being Gertrude's blue dress and Claudius's suit in their wedding scene (Act 1, scene ii). The way Hamlet and Ophelia dress is also timeless, but they also have more distinct moments, like Hamlet's jeans and muscle t-shirt (act 3, scene i) which can be linked to more current times , while his costume in the wedding scene (Act 1, scene ii) is more classical, but at the same time formal and modern. Ophelia's clothes from the scene where her brother Laertes warns her about Hamlet (act 1, scene iii) are more modern, but her dress for the play scene within the play (act 3, scene ii) was , like Hamlet's costume, classic and modern. The clothes are a way for the audience to identify with the characters and, in a very subtle way, to say that the story of Hamlet can be told by several generations..
