  • Essay / Pros and Cons of Universal Health Care - 1137

The American health care system should not be universal because the government should not decide the health care choices of its citizens. Citizens should be allowed to choose the doctor and coverage they want at the price they are willing to pay. Not only would universal health care degrade the medical industry, it would force people to pay for something they don't necessarily need or want. Today's healthcare system is a perfect example of government intervention in a free market. Such a system violates the rights of patients, doctors and businessmen. Although many people refuse to see it, the foundation of universal health care is based on socialist ideas. In an industry where talent and intellect are required, value will no longer be placed on a doctor's expertise or skills. There will be no profit incentive for medical providers if they are paid the same regardless of the quality of the treatment they administer. The two government health insurance programs, Medicare and Medicaid, are a prime example. Medicare determines which doctor the patient sees and what treatments are appropriate. It also determines the duration of treatment, as well as the doctor's remuneration. Financially speaking, these programs are bankrupting our government. By the objective standard, “these two federal insurance programs represent nearly 20 percent of the federal budget, and that percentage continues to increase.” (Zinser, “Moral Health Care versus Universal Health Care”). Doctors are paid far less to treat Medicare patients due to insufficient funding for the program and therefore must turn away many new Medicare patients. This is an example of what public health care would look like if it were based on cost-effective measures. Treatment of a patient's health should not be decided by the government. Privatization of health care will impact those who can afford full coverage and those who can only afford minimal coverage. It will also affect small businesses who will not be required to provide health care to their employees, a huge expense that would save money and allow the hiring of new staff. Overall, better treatment will be achieved if the government is removed from the equation. By allowing healthcare companies to compete, the boundaries will be pushed to accommodate patients. Providers will strive to find new remedies and treatment methods, in order to attract more customers. The private healthcare system will pay doctors and healthcare professionals for their skills and abilities, and the more they treat their patients, the better..
