    Texting and DrivingImagine running three football fields with your eyes closed. Now imagine driving 75 miles per hour on the highway and closing your eyes for about three football fields, or 4.6 seconds. This is actually what happens when people text and drive. Texting while driving is a serious problem in the United States and causes too many deaths and accidents. There are some surprising statistics about texting while driving. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) stated that in 2008, 16% of all fatal crashes and 21% of all crashes were caused by texting and driving (Chordas; Hartwell). More than 50% of teenagers admit to using their cell phones while driving (Hart; Paterson). That was more than five years ago, and today more and more people are texting and driving. This shows that this problem is not going to go away. The United States lags behind when it comes to texting and driving laws. In Japan, texting and driving are illegal, punishable by up to three months in prison. In Britain, it is a criminal offense to text while driving. Worldwide...
