    Three million incidents of bullying are reported each year in the United States and more than 160,000 children miss school every day because they are afraid of being victims of bullying (Havenrich). Suicide is the third leading cause of death among 15 to 24 year olds and the sixth leading cause of death among 5 to 14 year olds (“bullying”). Bullying has been going on for decades (Garby) and goes unnoticed by many on a daily basis. One in four students face daily teasing, teasing, shoving and name-calling from school bullies (Havenrich). Bullying occurs on the playground, during lessons, and to and from school (Wright). Harassment has become a major problem and some states are passing laws to stop harassment (Garby). This harms the people being bullied, affects the bully themselves and sometimes people who did not participate in the bullying. Bullying causes great harm to the person being bullied (“bullying”). Children who are bullied sometimes feel hated, unimportant, and terrified (“bullying”). Bullied children wake up every day knowing that bullies are waiting to torture, embarrass and hurt them (Wright). More than 43 percent of middle and high school students avoid using school bathrooms because they are afraid of getting messed up or hurt (Havenrich). Children who are bullied may have physical symptoms like headaches, stomach pain, or problems sleeping (“What effects”). Some children are physically injured and are left with bruises, black eyes, broken bones, internal injuries, scars, damaged testicles and kidneys and are blinded in one eye (Wright). They sometimes lose confidence or hope in themselves (“What effects”). Bullying can lead to mental, physical and social problems in children.
