  • Essay / A Solitary Attitude: Desert Places - 690

A person's view of their surroundings can show their emotions and attitude towards life. In “Desert Places” by Robert Frost, the narrator stands in the middle of an empty, deserted field. It's snowing and the field almost looks like a blanket of white snow, except for a few stubble peeking through the grass. Around the field is a forest full of animals hiding from the cold. The narrator feels alone for unknown reasons. Robert Frost uses the setting of “Desert Places” to depict the emotions of an abandoned and isolated person. Frost uses two types of imagery, visual and auditory, to convey the narrator's feeling of loneliness. In the first stanza, Frost uses visual imagery. He first tells the reader that since “night is falling quickly,” it is almost dark (1). He describes the setting by telling the reader that there is “snow falling” in “a field” that covers “the ground” “with snow” except for “a few weeds and some stubble” (1 -4). This view of imagery helps the reader understand the narrator's loneliness. Instead of using words that convey the narrator's loneliness and emotions, he instead describes the terrain to reflect his emotions. In the second stanza, Frost similarly describes the landscape surrounding the field. He explains that there are “woods around” the field (5). Inside the forest there are “animals [that] are suffocated in their dens” (6). The description of the forest is also linked to the narrator's loneliness. Even the animals that usually roam around this field hide and are nowhere to be found. This shows how deserted the land is and how deserted the narrator feels. Frost also uses auditory imagery to describe the landscape. Frost doesn't exactly...... middle of paper ......ds the field is provoked by his emotions of isolation and abandonment. This feeling is so overwhelming to the narrator that he cannot view life as the beautiful thing that it is, but rather with an impassive tone. The title “Desert Places” represents the narrator’s feelings of loneliness and his attitude towards life. As if the field were deserted and ownerless, the narrator feels abandoned and isolated from his former friends and family. The theme of the poem was the emotions of a lonely person. The setting, figurative language, and tone all worked to make the reader try to feel this emotion that the narrator is feeling. Overall, the poem gives a deep insight into the emotions of a lonely or abandoned person. The average single person's opinion would be depressed. However, this poem explains that sometimes a single person may have no emotions to express..
