  • Essay / Job titles during the industrial age - 1227

In Britain, there were many different jobs between the mid to late 19th century and early 20th century. Amidst the great multitude of jobs of this period, there were a few that were relatively safe and with decent pay, there were the less desirable ones that were dangerous with less pay, and then there were the Extremely ridiculous jobs which no one wanted, but had to take reluctantly due to the high levels of poverty at that time. During class, we had to watch videos documenting what workers had to do if they were in these ridiculously dangerous and terrible jobs. The videos began with tasks primarily based on repetitive manual labor. The first job featured in the videos was the water cart, which had the tedious and back-breaking task of filling a barrel with approximately sixty-six pounds of water and transporting the barrel across town in order to deliver water to personal residences. This work served the same purpose as running water, but was done by people rather than pipes. The next job was that of an early firefighter, whose only equipment was a human-operated helmet into which fresh air was pumped by a contraption called a bellows. from outside the building so that the wearer can breathe. The fire helmet was very heavy, bulky and cumbersome and the wearer could not see the ground due to the rectangular windows which did not allow seeing below eye level. There were two other jobs that came with being a firefighter. One job consisted of a firefighter, who stood outside and pumped the bellows with his foot in order to pump air into the firefighter's helmet. If they stopped pumping, the firefighter would suffocate and die. The next job is that of the climber, whose only equipment was a long ladder which...... middle of paper......a pugger as it is an extremely tedious and tiring job. After deciding that I probably wouldn't like to become a pugger, I started looking into aspects of tanning work. Since the only concerns I currently had about the tanning job were the smell and the heat of the environment, I decided it was a fairly harmless job that wouldn't produce many negative effects. Through this long study and analysis of these professions, I came to the conclusion that being a tanner would have suited me the most if I had lived through the end of the 18th and the beginning of the 19th century. What job do you think you would be best suited to accommodate their situation? Why do you think your job choice would be the right choice for you? Do you think you would be able to keep this job and make a career out of it in order to support yourself and your family during this first period? ??
