  • Essay / Sammy as a Pynamic Character in A & P By John Updike

In the short story "A&P" by John Updike, we see a nineteen-year-old store clerk named Sammy; which presumably projects a self-centered young adult who eventually matures throughout that day, especially when three girls enter the store. Later, by impacting a decision that changes him mentally for good, this describes his maturation process. All of this shows that Sammy is actually a dynamic character. Where his character's point of view evolves from immature behavior to slowly maturing throughout the day to take a stand; not caring about the consequences that his decision will bring and thus showing his coming of age (moving from childhood to adulthood). From the beginning of the story "A&P", we see Sammy's childishness and immaturity revealed. And he shows this for example in the first line by saying, “Three girls are walking around in nothing but swimsuits” (Updike 18). Demonstrating how Sammy describes girls sexually from a perspective that, stereotypically, many nineteen-year-old men would also have. Following the descriptive manner in which he goes on to speak of each of the three girls individually, "There was this one who was big, with the two pieces...her belly was still quite pale" then the next one, "there was this one ...and a tall one...the kind of girl that the other girls find very "striking" and "attractive" and the last one, "the third one wasn't very tall. On those long white primadonna legs." I like to quit a job; to impress some girls Throughout the story, you...... middle of paper...... He left “His face was gray. dark and his back was stiff. if he had just received an iron injection, and my stomach had sort of dropped feeling how hard the world was going to be for me afterwards" (23). This quote from the last sentence illustrates that even although he knows that his parents will be upset about his decision, he now knows that he is responsible for his life and that he can make a decision without worrying about what others have to say about it. Sammy is indeed a dynamic character as the story "A&P" by John Updike shows the progress in which Sammy goes from childish/immature behavior to having the power to stand up for himself and do what he knows is right to you. see this change through the words and actions of Sammy's character throughout the story This story showing the development of his ability to be in charge of his decisions..
