  • Essay / SOCIAL DIMENSION - 675

When a child is removed from their home, they are often estranged from more than their biological parents. Children are also distanced from their friends, schools and communities (Farineau & McWey, 2011). Being separated from many of your possessions that mean a lot to you could create a feeling of loss and confusion. Not knowing how to manage these new feelings, children may react in maladaptive ways (Farineau & McWey, 2011). Zapata el al believes that during these transitions, children often feel like they have no one to turn to for help (2013). Although they are surrounded by a lot of new people, they need to build a new sense of trust. When a child is placed in foster care, it may be with someone they have never met. Having had to adapt to new faces and new housing, school is also a major issue for these children. Dropping out of school, running away from home, teen pregnancy, substance abuse, and suicide are all risk factors that children in foster care face if these connections are not respected. A study by Farineau and McWey in the 2011 Children and Youth Review indicates that there is substantial evidence that children who experience abuse and neglect are at high risk for emotional and behavioral problems. Behavioral problems often lead to delinquency and poor life choices. When thinking about ways to help children make the transition, “studies have shown that strengthening a sense of community through participation in extracurricular activities can be one way to help reduce problem behaviors” (Farineau and McWey, 2011). By engaging children in extracurricular activities, it could help rebuild a sense of belonging and self-esteem. Studies show that children placed in foster care with an older child often have difficulty meeting these requirements...... middle of article...... n, JP, Hong, JS, Herz, D. and Hemandez, Prime Minister (2010).
