Early LifeKing's parents were Donald and Nellie Ruth Pillsbury King. He attended elementary school in Durham and graduated from Lisbon Falls High School in Maine. In 1970, he received a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from the University of Maine. He showed an early interest in horror reading and began writing for pleasure while still at school. Collins (1988) reports that "the discovery of a collection of paperbacks left by his father stimulated King's interest in science fiction and adventure."
