  • Essay / Rape in Society - 1090

One of the causes of rape culture is the objectification and domination of women. Men learn to assert their dominance and superiority, and some will do so with or without consent. Men see women as objects waiting to be used and conquered, whether at home, in the workplace, or in the media. A woman's body is not her own, but simply used for a man's pleasure. The solution to this problem would not be to tell women what to wear, how to act, and what they can or cannot do; but it's about teaching men from a young age not to rape women by discussing it with them, explaining to them how it affects people, the consequences and telling them that it is never acceptable. Men are allowed to get away with objectifying and dominating. women in this society because that is what we, as a culture, are accustomed to. It's always in the news, it's not strange to know someone who has been raped or sexually assaulted; and it can happen anywhere, from work to the car to walking or even at home. For some men, sex is a game and a woman telling them “no” will only make them be more persistent in getting it. As long as women are blamed for their own attacks, men will retain all the power and control; and it is not taught that raping and hurting women is neither acceptable nor acceptable, rape culture is going nowhere. In the article "Offensive Feminism: The Conservative Gender Norms That Perpetuate Rape Culture and How Feminists Can Fight Back," Filipovic explains that some conservative extremists and even some ordinary people want to maintain a culture that allows and promotes rape because that women pose a threat to power structures and that the constant threat of rape keeps men and women in line (23).
