  • Essay / My Motivation to Obtain a Degree in African Studies

I am honored to apply for the Master of Arts in African Studies with a concentration on African colonization and modern politics. Africa has become a vital region in the world today due to its rapidly growing economic development and political revolution. Additionally, I am originally from Nigeria and political instability has increased since 2015 when I left the country for the United States for my undergraduate studies. This is one of the main reasons why I decided to study African studies at your university. I received my bachelor's degree in Global Studies (Political and Economic Development) and Political Science from Idaho State University. During my undergraduate coursework, I did extensive research on political crises in Nigeria and Africa. My research areas were on Boko Haram fundamentalism in West Africa and China-Africa relations, my case study was on Chinese influence in Nigeria and Zimbabwe (analyze and examine whether relations are good or bad and who benefits from its trade agreement). The application for the program was reviewed after several discussions and meetings with academic advisors and mentors. This is because I saw it as a valuable tool for me in my quest to create a sustainable government in Nigeria and Africa in general. In the ongoing senatorial elections in Nigeria, I worked with some candidates to see what each candidate would bring to their constituency. In addition, I was able to create a foundation in Nigeria last year, whose objective is the eradication of poverty and the return of young girls to school as well as sustainable basic and quality education in institutions established in the region. The foundation also creates funds for women who want to start a small business to boost the local economy. Funds are coming from donors around the world to help finance these endeavors and I see that these extensive efforts are progressing well as planned during our planning. The foundation decided to synergize efforts with some real drug agencies to help break the cycle of alcoholism and drug addiction. In addition to this, the foundation offers crucial conservation advice to put young teens on the right track and set the tone. Say no to plagiarism.
