  • Essay / Psychology: The Five Levels of Consciousness - 864

The Bible describes us as tripartite beings composed of spirit, soul and body (1 Thessalonians 5:23). In a crude and imperfect way, the mind corresponds to Freud's Superego; the soul to the Ego; and the body to Id. The Bible also reveals a struggle between the mind and the body (aka the Superego and the Id if you will) best illustrated by Paul in Romans 7. However, Freud and the Bible part ways in diagnosing and prescribing the internal conflict of humanity. Where Freud perceives the human being as being entirely physical, the Bible presents it as being both physical and spiritual. Although both agree that the desires of the body are themselves amoral, the Bible maintains that a spiritual being should not be ruled by carnal impulses. In short, Freud sides with the id rather than the superego while the Bible sides with the mind rather than the body” (Wade). The Bible completely disagrees. Behavior is at the heart of humanity's illnesses. Guilt arises when one violates one's standards by following what one wants to do instead of what one should do. The Bible prescribes confession and repentance as the solution. A person is healed when they recognize their wrongdoing, accept responsibility, and commit to change.”
