Advocating for the patient's interests is one of many important responsibilities of the nurse to ensure patient safety. An example of a situation in which the nurse should advocate for the patient would be if the doctor prescribes a medication to which the nurse knows the patient is having allergic reactions. It would then be the nurse's duty to defend the patient's interests by reminding the doctor of his allergy. The nurse could then also answer any questions the patient or family had regarding the new corrected medication or simply translate any medical terminology that was not available.
