    Irony is an expression. This is when words are used in a way that their proposed meaning is different from the actual meaning of the words. It can also result in completely different circumstances than we might have expected, making things less obvious than we might have anticipated. It's a distinction between appearance and authenticity, and this is the case in "The Story of an Hour." A story in which the liberation of women from a strict, underlying marriage was common in the 1890s. However, there occurs a deeper level of something surprising and interesting, but yet this is exactly the opposite of what the reader would expect. This is an example of situational irony. The characters and readers seemed unaware of the outcome, I know I was. Starting with: a. Brently Mallard dies. Mrs. Mallard cries but nevertheless seems elated by the death of her husband.
