  • Essay / How Bayard Rustin influenced the civil rights movement

Rustin was giving a lecture for the (AAUW). American Association of University Women, when her “Lude” act was committed. Although Rustin did not commit actual deception or lascivious acts, at that time any public display of homosexuality was illegal in all states and was subject to criminal prosecution. Rustin did not let this accusation affect him, a few years after his release from these accusations he became open about his sexuality. Having recently embraced his gay pride, Rustin began to fight and defend gay rights, integrating them into his fight for African-American civil society.
