  • Essay / Job Redesign - 887

Job RedesignImagine you are a receptionist, taking phone calls and filing every day. Imagine that you work and perform the same tasks every day. Employees will eventually become bored and unmotivated in their work because they are not learning and completing the same task every day. Job redesign is an element in which jobs can be remodeled in order to make them more motivating. It is among the most popular in some companies. Generally, job redesign includes six elements. These are job rotation, job enlargement, job enrichment, flexible hours, work sharing and teleworking. Job redesign, which affects businesses and workers more positively than negatively, includes job rotation, job enlargement, job enrichment, flextime, job sharing, and telecommuting. By organizing these elements well, companies can achieve multiple benefits, such as increasing employee motivation and satisfaction, reducing absenteeism and turnover costs, and increasing productivity. The Organization Behavior textbook says that job rotation is “the periodic movement of an employee from one task to another” (215). This way, employees can escape boredom and also increase their motivation. Job enlargement defines that “increasing the number and variety of tasks an individual performs results in more diverse jobs” (217). For example, housekeepers in some small hotels handle various tasks, such as cleaning the bathroom, making beds, and preparing meals. This work helps to increase their responsibility and duties. Job enrichment involves “…increasing the degree to which the worker controls the planning, execution, and evaluation of his or her work” (217). Flextime is flexible working hours. Employees can schedule their work hours when they are most productive. In addition, they have a certain degree of freedom: they can freely come and go to work. Job sharing is “an agreement that allows two or more people to divide [their working hours]” (219). This allows workers to have a good balance between work and family responsibilities. So employees can satisfy their work and life. In addition, their satisfaction increases business productivity. Teleworking allows employees to work from home at least two days a week via a computer (219). This gives flexibility to employees and it also has a positive impact on businesses, such as lowering office space costs. If companies organize these components tactfully, both companies and employees can benefit mutually. Call types are often divided into outgoing and incoming calls. Incoming calls are calls made by the consumer to obtain information, report a malfunction or request help..
