  • Essay / Animal Testing - 678

Which would you prefer it to be? You or the animal? Have you ever had a family member who had to undergo open heart surgery? If your answer is yes, you have animals to thank for making open heart surgery possible. We first started performing open heart surgeries on monkeys to see what would happen and if they would survive. Without any animal testing, none of this would have been possible. Animal testing may seem cruel and terrible to you at first, but once you hear what I have to tell you, you will realize that we need it and it's not even that cruel. Animal testing has helped us in medicine in many different ways. Not only helping to find cures for diseases in humans, but also helping to find cures for diseases in animals. Many people think that animals are simply tortured when they are in testing facilities, but in reality, most of the time this is not the case. Animals are not just taken out of the wild to be tested, they are born in captivity specifically to be tested. We must continue animal testing so that we can continue to save animal and human lives. Many extremists try to argue that there are other ways and that we shouldn't do animal testing because it's cruel. However, no other method can come close to physically performing an actual surgery or transplant. Animals make good test subjects Jane Goodall said that “chimpanzees share 99% of their DNA with humans” (Animal Testing). Jane Goodall also stated that “mice are 98% genetically similar to humans” (Animal Testing). This makes chimpanzees and mice the closest thing we have to test on, besides ourselves. There is no adequate alternative to whole-body living system testing other than animals. We are also allowed to test animals in the middle of paper... as was the case twenty years ago. Many researchers today agree that animal testing is an essential asset for the development of medical research. Animal testing helps advance our medical knowledge, saves human and animal lives, and there is simply no other way to get the results we want. need. They just want to make sure that the medications and other products we use are safe for us and won't kill us. Animal testing allows us to better understand the drugs we use today. In all or most cases, it will not give us the instant results or cures we want, but it will certainly help save human lives. You have to be able to continue testing on animals, you can't make a test tube cough or make a computer's heart beat. Would you rather it be you or an animal?
