    Francis Marion, or the “Swamp Fox”, is the king of guerrilla warfare. Which made him vital to the American Revolution. Another reason why Francis Marion was so important to the Revolution was everything he did for the Patriot cause. He fought in many wars in the South and was one of the main reasons we won the Revolutionary War. Finally, Francis Marion was important because of his dedication to the Revolution and his country (US history). Francis Marion was born near Georgetown in Berkeley County, South Carolina, in 1732. As a young child he did not receive a very good education but lived on several plantations, including St. George and Eutaw Springs . At the age of 15, he went to sea with his brother and the blessing of his parents and was shipwrecked near Georgetown and the West Indies. It was then taken care of by the settlers. Shortly afterward, he fought in the French and Indian War in 1760 and served under William Moultrie against the Cherokee. After serving at war, he became a successful planter in St. John's Parish. Soon he purchased a plantation on the Santee River. In 1775, when war broke out, he became very prominent in the Patriot cause by being elected to the South Carolina Provincial Congress, again fighting in many wars in the South under Moultrie, and fighting at Fort Sullivan and Fort Moultrie . In September 1778 he was appointed commander of the Second South Carolina State Regiment. The following year, he fought under Benjamin Lincoln in the Second Battle of Savannah called the Siege of Savannah. After the British victory at the Battle of Camden in 1780, he led numerous successful nighttime guerrilla attacks against the British in the lowlands and hinterlands. Also all the things he did for America and it was free. It's like having been in so many wars and being the reason they were won.
