  • Essay / Animal Farm by George Orwell - 1171

Intelligent people can and sometimes do use propaganda, lies, or deception to get what they want. This is demonstrated through the actions of the characters in Animal Farm. These actions are especially visible in the pigs, leaders and the lead group of Animal Farm animals, due to their high intelligence over the rest of the animals. The first major sign of propaganda appears when the pigs claim that they “need” everything. milk and apples for themselves in order to work as efficiently as possible. The pigs declare that since they play the smartest and most crucial role in the Animal Farm unit, they must consume all the milk and apples themselves, for the betterment of the entire farm. Since almost all other animals on the farm lack the intelligence to defend their own opinions, they are easily manipulated into fully believing what the pigs say and fail to see their deception. In his speech on the theme of milk and apples, Squealer, who is the spiritual spokesperson for the pigs, explains: “We pigs are brains. The entire management and organization of this farm depends on us. Day and night, we are watching over your well-being. It is for your good that we drink this milk and eat these apples. Do you know what would happen if we pigs failed in our duty? Jones would return!..." (p. 52) Squealer tries to convince the animals that milk and apples are essential to the overall stability of the farm. But in reality, it is obvious that the pigs only want milk and apples for their own benefit Squealer corners the other animals in a situation where they cannot challenge the idea by proclaiming that Farmer Jones would return to the farm. This scares the other animals and makes them vulnerable... middle of. paper......and a great speaker and motivator to trick the other animals into getting what he wants Since Napoleon doesn't have the loud, summoning voice that Squealer displays, Squealer ends up giving all the speeches. at Animal Farm meetings it is during these times that he is able to change the opinions of the other animals and confuse them enough to reluctantly accept what Squealer says since almost all of the animals on the farm. farm, with the exception of pigs, lack much intelligence, Squealer creates elaborate speeches that do not tell the whole truth and have a double meaning, to trick the other animals into agreeing with him. Although pigs use their intelligence to overpower other animals, greed is a sign of lack of intelligence. If pigs were truly intelligent, they would make decisions for the best of society as a whole, not just themselves..
