    Pride changed the way Brother thought about Doodle. At first he was so happy to have a little brother. Then everything changed when he discovered that the Doodle was paralyzed. The brother's actions to help Doodle learn to do things an average person can do turned into embarrassment for having a disabled brother. "The Scarlet Ibis" is a short story written by James Hurst. The way Hurst wrote this story made it seem like non-fiction, but it is actually realistic fiction. The brothers' emotions changed when he discovered that Doodle, his younger brother, was crippled. However, when Brother discovered that Doodle was "all there", he decided to teach him to walk. The symbols Hurst used in "The Scarlet Ibis" had many different meanings.
