  • Essay / Life During the Dust Bowl - 753

The Dust Bowl was a difficult time for farmers in the 1930s. The Dust Bowl was a drought that resulted in numerous dust storms, which lasted for about a decade. What was life like for residents of the Dust Bowl? People spent a decade of their lives trying to survive in a drought, battling disease, shoveling dust from their homes, and watching all their crops fail. Some residents thought it was the end of the world. Being a kid in Oklahoma during the Dust Bowl wasn't the best. Every morning, regardless of the weather conditions, the children had to milk their cows and feed all the animals on the farm (A Child's Life During the Dust Bowl). The walks to and from school were never easy. They walked several kilometers and it was always very windy. Sometimes the children had no choice but to walk backwards because the wind was so strong. Pneumonia was also a problem for children. As food was also scarce in the dust bin, the children suffered as their parents starved. Moving away from the dust bowl didn't mean life would get easier. Many people moved to California and received the nickname "Okies." Most of the kids were teased for being Okie. The Okies were called stupid because they didn't have as much opportunity to go to school because of the dust storms (A Child's Life During the Dust Bowl). In my opinion, if I were a child living in a dust bowl, I would probably want to kill myself. I wouldn't be able to handle it. It seemed like there was nothing to hope for and every day was another struggle. I can barely go a few hours without eating anything. Knowing that they had to eat the same things every day and always ended up chewing dust makes me happy with the way my life...... middle of paper ... lots of fine sand thrown away against the face. People stuck in their own backyard grope for the doorstep. The cars stop, for no light in the world can penetrate this swirling darkness... We live with the dust, eat it, sleep with it, watch it strip us of our possessions and the hope of possessions. It's getting real." said Avis D. Carlson (Ganzel, The Dust Bowl). Farmers could have colorful fruit one day, and the next day it turned black the next day. People were really tired of the drought and were desperate to try anything to let the rain fall. This guy named Tex Thorton had a crazy idea that the explosions would give some excitement to the atmosphere and that rain would occur, after a few explosions falling from the sky. wasn't what people were looking for Then, one random day, a group..
