  • Essay / Effects of Communication on Interpersonal Communication

My self-perception is that I am reserved, slow to warm up, and withdrawn in most social communication contexts. My strengths and weaknesses in interpersonal communication and feedback are influenced by my self-concept. When interacting with others, I excel at asking open-ended questions and restating what I have been told. I will work on improving my nonverbal communication by constantly reminding myself to stay engaged and open with my body language until it becomes natural for me. As for trying new verbal communication skills, I will attempt confrontation more often in order to feel comfortable with this skill. When giving feedback, my strengths are being specific, timely, and generally observant. I plan to improve by giving objective, constructive feedback that focuses on his actions rather than his innate qualities. Additionally, I will focus on providing feedback that includes what one needs to improve, as well as what one is executing successfully. Both of these aspects will come with practice and careful thought and attention when communicating. In the months and years to come, I intend to work to overcome some of my reservations to become a more effective and competent employee.
