    Morality and politics have always been closely linked; Even in today's politics, morality often has a role to play. Morality in politics has always been a controversial and much debated topic among many leading political thinkers. Many key thinkers have addressed the subject; However, both Plato and Augustine have an interesting and very controversial view on whether politics should be focused on morality. Plato and Augustine had divergent views on political ideas and the role morality plays in it. These two political thinkers lived in very different times and this is reflected in their views on morality and politics. Plato was born in 429 BC and came from a distinguished Athenian family, heavily involved in Athenian politics. As a student of Socrates, it was inevitable that Plato would be influenced by Socrates and inspired to enter politics. At the time Plato was writing, Greece was plagued by instability and Plato's goal was to stabilize the "Polis", meaning "city-state" and primarily involving Athens and Sparta, giving rise to an interesting take on morality and politics. Augustine was born in 354 AD, in a culture dominated by Rome, and had strong Christian beliefs, which strongly influenced his views on morality and politics. This essay will examine Plato and Saint Augustine's view of morality and politics, and determine whether or not politics should focus on morality, before arriving at a reasoned judgment. Both Plato and Augustine consider whether or not politics should focus on morality. However, their approach to the study and the result of their thinking lead to very different results. It is almost impossible to separate politics from morality. Therefore, centering politics on morality can only serve to improve understanding of different political systems. Politics has focused on morality from the time Plato was writing until Augustine and even today it was and remains important for politics to focus on morality; therefore politics should be focused on morality.
