  • Essay / Free Essays on A Midsummer Night's Dream: The Comedy

Comedy in A Midsummer Night's Dream "why are they running away? It's a rogue of them to make fear." (3.1.99) This is a quote from the Shakespearean play “A Midsummer Night's Dream”. In this quote, the speaker Bottom wonders why everyone is afraid of him. He doesn't realize that, as a joke, the trickster Puck has put a donkey's head on his shoulders. This causes all his companions to fear him and run away. This is an example of the comedy involved in this play. This essay will show you that A Midsummer Night's Dream is a play primarily composed of comedy. The funniest part of this play seems to be when Puck, the trickster, keeps mixing up the people he's tasked with putting the love juice into. . Even when he put love juice in the eyes of good people, they sometimes fell in love with the wrong people. The first example of this mistake from Puck is where he puts love juice in Lysander's eyes, mistaking him for Demetrius. Oberon tells Puck to put love juice in the eyes of an Athenian, Demetrius, and make sure that the first thing he sees after that is the woman he hates, but loves him so much , Helena. Puck eventually finds Lysander and Hermia, in love, sleeping on the forest floor. He puts the love juice in Lysander's eyes and leaves. Then come Helena and Demetrius to this place. They still argue and Demetrius leaves her with the sleeping Lysander and Hermia. Helena notices them there and tries to wake Lysandre. Lysandre wakes up and the first thing he sees is Helena. "And run through the fire for the sake of your sweat. Transparent Helen! Nature shows art, Who through your breast shows me your heart."(2.2.103). This is what Demetrius says to Helen when he sees her. He fell in love with her. This is where the comedy of this romantic mix begins. Now Helena is confused and thinks Lysandre is playing a trick on her so she runs away. This is a particularly funny part of the play and these confusions with who likes seem to be the funniest bits of the play. Another fun section of this play is where Puck puts an ass head on Bottom's shoulders..
