A Million Little Pieces by James FreyMain Characters: James, Leonard, Lilly, Miles, HankSetting: A drug and alcohol rehabilitation centerMain Theme: How a person deals with their addiction to drugs and alcohol while in an institutionSummary Chapter 1-5: The book opens with the narrator, James, waking up on a plane. He's bleeding, missing four teeth and has a broken nose. He doesn't know how he was injured or where he is going. They tell him that a concerned friend of his contacted them and that his injuries were the result of falling down a fire escape. James has no memory of it. James' parents and brother take him to a rehabilitation clinic. James has three roommates: Larry, Warren and John. James thinks it's best for no one to get too close to him, as he sees himself as a destructive and damaging force who has very little to contribute to anyone's life. He believes that believing in AA is simply trading one addiction for another. He goes into rehab, always thinking at all times that he's going to leave because rehab is "not for him." This is not a good start considering how much he needs help.Summary Chapter 6-10: James' brother, Bob, and two friends, Julie and Kirk, come to visit him at the clinic. They bring him gifts: cigarettes, chocolate, clothes and books. They watch a football game together then take a walk in the woods, where they meet Lilly and her grandmother. Bob, Julie and Kirk urge James to try to get better and give him a list of people who have asked about him. Lilly is a girl that James meets at the clinic although he has little or no contact with her aside from the fleeting visits they chance here and there. The next day, James' new job is to make coffee for the group, a clear sign that he has progressed and moved up the clinic ladder. James' psychology test results reveal that he is highly intelligent, short-tempered, and has low self-esteem. Joanne (his therapist) tries to convince him to accept the Twelve Step program, which is solely responsible for the establishment's success rate, but James refuses. Summary Chapter 11-15: Joanne and James talk about the Twelve Step program. James still refuses to follow him. He suggests that he doesn't like churches and priests.
