This era of progress, known to all as the Industrial Revolution, ushered the world into a wave of innovations and improvements. Many of these improvements or contributions were essential to American history. Of the men who made these contributions, three were the most important, Samuel Morse, Cyrus McCormick, and Benjamin Silliman. Born April 27, 1791, Samuel Finley Breese Morse is best known as the inventor of the telegraph and the founder of Morse code. Inspired and saddened by the late news of his wife's death, Samuel Morse laid the foundation for worldwide telecommunications. His telegraph would eventually evolve into cellular communications, radios, telephones and even the Internet. These are all essential forms of communication that keep planes flying, ensure important messages are sent and received as quickly as possible, and protect economies and personal secrets.
