    Throughout Lorraine Hansberry's A Raisin in the Sun, we see the positive and negative effects of pursuing the American dream. Hansberry expresses her different views on the American dream through the characters and she depicts the daily struggles of a 1950s black family throughout A Raisin in the Sun. In this play, she is able to effectively show the significant impact that even small decisions can have on a family. Hansberry shows the many different attachments that come with achieving this American dream. Throughout A Raisin in the Sun, each member of the family has their own quest for happiness, which is accompanied by their American dream. In the play, Mom has her own American dream that she is chasing, which greatly affects the family's state of being. Mom has to go through many struggles and much frustration in pursuit of her American dream (Bloom 17). Mom said: “Yes, death has already entered this house... I have already entered my house. On the lips of my children. You're supposed to be my new beginning. You’re supposed to be my crop” (Hansberry 134). She begins to see the harsh consequences of what her American dream has done to her children. Mom goes through trials and tribulations to provide a good lifestyle for her children, but neither of them seems satisfied, they both want to achieve their dreams and aspirations so much that it blinds them to the reality of what is really important in life. carrying such a heavy load on her shoulder while trying to keep the family together deprives her of the happiness she once obtained. Mom seems to be the commanding presence and head of the family. She has moral strength and dignity and that is why she is considered the stronghold...... middle of paper... as the breadwinner of the family unlike Walter. Each family member dreams of improving the family situation; however, all of these dreams depend on an insurance check which begins to cause problems and tension within the family (Bloom 18). However, all of these dreams rely on a single insurance check to be funded. Throughout Raisin in the Sun, each member of the family has their own quest for happiness, which is accompanied by their American dream. Mom wants to provide a better quality of life for her family. Beneatha aspires to become a successful doctor and an independent woman. Walter wants to invest in a liquor store and live in luxury. In A Rasin in the Sun, we see that each character goes through their own struggles and frustrations to achieve their American dream, but in the end, they all find their happiness in each other, united as a family..
