Strive for EqualityIt is stated in the Equal Rights Amendment that "equality of rights under the law shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or any other State on grounds of sex”. Yet, looking at history, one can see that gender has played a vital role in determining a person's status in society. The challenges women face began when they were just young girls. These girls were raised with the idea that they were only suited to certain professions, usually only to serve as wives and mothers. These beliefs about staying within their boundaries remain fears in women's minds, so as they approach adulthood, they have already shaped themselves to fit these beliefs. There are many literary works that brought to life women in their struggle for freedom. One example, “The Chrysanthemums” by John Steinbeck, tells the story of Elisa and her struggle to escape the feminine world. The idea of becoming more than an ideal wife inspires women to push their limits in an attempt to gain power in a man's world hoping to be recognized for their strengths. Discrimination has always given men greater power over women, who are ideally expected to sit back. within their limited limits. These traditions led to stronger women who wanted to try to push their limits. When Elisa is working in her garden, she notices that her husband is talking to some men and she "[looks] from time to time towards the men near the tractor shed" (Steinbeck 1). Elisa looking at the men repeatedly shows her curiosity to break out of her limited life which is the fence around which she finds herself. The fence symbolizes his life. This also symbolizes how she is very fed up with her married life and is now desperate to get out of it. But the... middle of paper ......ue beauty, and therefore was never interested in Elisa. So Elisa comes back to reality, and falls back into the hole of being felt like a housewife rather than a free individual, which she despised. Overall, the impact that the Tinkerer has on Elisa brings Elisa back to where she started. This illustrates the impact of Elisa's desire to push her limits. Women try their best to push their limits, but never succeed, due to the overly pompous nature of men. Women are never seen for their strengths and are oppressed. Women have not been able to realize their full potential because society has refused to accept them liberally. This world could not progress with the isolation of women. It is clear from the story that gender bias prevents individuals from doing what they want. Nowadays women are free to do whatever they want.
