  • Essay / John Lee Malvo Research Paper - 1566

Over a three-week period in October 2002, a series of random sniper attacks paralyzed the Washington DC area. The shootings took place in various establishments such as supermarkets, gas stations, restaurants and near schools, turning normal quiet areas into chaotic killing fields. No age group, gender or ethnicity was safe. The victims were randomly selected and everyone was targeted. After this wave of killings, ten people were declared dead and several others injured. The perpetrators were eventually apprehended while sleeping at a resting place and later identified as John Allen Muhammad, 41, and his 17-year-old Jamaican-American protégé, Lee Boyd Malvo. Many influences can push young people like Lee Boyd Malvo to commit violent acts. Psychological, sociological, and biological factors play a coexisting role in the lives of young adults. Violence may be caused by disruption, damage, or an underdeveloped brain or may be caused by something else, such as economic hardship or social or cultural difficulties. The question of nature or nurture is the subject of ongoing debate. It can be argued that John Lee Malvo was born with predetermined genes or biological factors that played a vital role in creating his murderous tendencies or that he became murderous because of his environment, coupled with the psychological influence that Mohammed had on him. In this article, I will discuss the biological, psychological, and social upbringing of John Lee Malvo and how these factors contributed to the creation of a serial killer known as DC Sniper. Lee Boyd Malvo, also called John Lee Malvo or Boyd Malvo, was born on February 18, 1985. at Queen Victoria Jubilee Hospital, in a poverty-stricken area... middle of newspaper ...... raids in circle I had seen violence. There was no therapy, there was nothing, so these were things that were never brought up, never discussed, so I mean I had seen a lot of sick things in Jamaica and experienced in daily. (J. Malvo, personal interview, August 2013) Additionally, there were biological (nature) factors that contributed to his killing spree. Malvo's underdeveloped prefrontal cortex caused him to commit violent acts because he wasn't using the part of the brain that deals with consequences. With this, Muhammad had a golden opportunity to infiltrate, brainwash, manipulate and abuse him. It is difficult to determine whether nature or nurture dictates an individual's criminality, but in Malvo's case it showed that bio-psycho-social factors operated simultaneously and contributed to the birth of a serial murderer known as DC's Sniper..
