  • Essay / Virgin and Child by Lucas Cranach the Elder - 1377

Lucas Cranach the Elder's elaborate artwork entitled: Virgin and Child, 1513-1514, depicts the Virgin Mary and the Baby Jesus seated on what appears to be a bench under a tree. In the background and to the left of the Virgin Mary is a castle, or what could be considered a mansion of sorts. Closer to the Virgin Mary and the Child Jesus, but still behind them, is a path surrounded by grass. This path could mean they are in a park. One of the colors used in the painting is blue, which represents the sky. The brown color represents the tree, the bench and the path that lies between the grass behind the Virgin Mary and the Child Jesus. The Virgin Mary's hair is also brown in the painting. The color green is used for the clothing of the Virgin Mary, as well as for the vegetation of the Virgin and Child artwork. The color light brown, or what it appears to be, is also used in the works of Cranach the Elder. The castle, or manor, in the painting is light brown in color. What attracts me to the Virgin and Child by Cranach the Elder is the calm and serenity of the characters represented there. Cranach the Elder's style and depiction of the Virgin Mary and Baby Jesus sitting on a bench in the park would be considered unconventional to me, as most people of that era knew how far Jesus would go to be special, even before it is. born. Plus, knowing how great Jesus would have been even before he was born, I can imagine that people of that era would have gathered behind the Virgin Mary and Baby Jesus, almost bombarding them, because of all the noise. special things they heard about Jesus; coupled with the fact that it was a virgin birth by Mary. Well...... middle of paper ......t and now she is part of the life and legacy of Jesus. In summary, the Virgin and Child by Lucas Cranach the Elder represents everything that the great artists and painters of this era stood for in their works of art; they had a high opinion of religion. Cranach the Elder's use of composition, light and dark shadows, and space are some of the many elements he incorporates perfectly. This incorporation of formal elements correlates with the style of the Madonna and Child. Partly because of the influence of the Protestant Reformation at the time, audiences can see that the painting The Madonna and Child is a product of that era. The Virgin and Child by Lucas Cranach the Elder, although an unorthodox depiction of biblical times, features an unprecedented use of oil paint on lime as a medium, while incorporating formal and stylistic elements that artists still use today..
