  • Essay / 'Dirty money or golden opportunity? - 568

As demand grows, Canada begins to become the oil hot spot. Many companies are creating many projects to extract oil from Canadian lands to send it to various developed and developing countries. The Northern Gateway Pipeline is a project that sees the true value of this demand. This project was proposed by Enbridge Inc. to transport bitumen as well as oil from Alberta to British Columbia and then to Asia. Many critics disagree with the idea of this project. However, I am here to assure you, Prime Minister Stephen Harper, that this project is an excellent idea. The Northern Gateway pipeline project will have many wonderful impacts on the country. This project will provide a huge boost to our economy as it would generate more money and jobs for the people of Alberta and British Columbia, and therefore for all Canadians. The Northern Gateway Pipeline will create approximately 62,700 permanent person-years (person per year) of employment over a three-year construction phase. This will include 5,537 person-years of employment directly at the construction site, 17,227 person-years of employment in companies that directly provide goods and services for construction, as well as 39,930 person-years of indirect employment . At peak construction, between 2,000 and 3,000 jobs will be created to build the pipeline and its facilities. This represents a lot of jobs compared to other projects in Canada, and it's not even the end. This project will generate $275 million for our global domestic product (GDP); it will also bring $2.6 billion in tax revenue to local, provincial and federal governments over 30 years. Despite what most critics say, the Northern Gateway project will preserve and protect the environment. Enbridge Inc. has taken many, if not all, necessary precautions to prevent leaks, spills and any other problems that may arise. Enbridge plans to use advanced land-based radars to make areas safer for ferries. In this way, maritime traffic will decrease, leading to less pollution and a cleaner atmosphere, while travelers will arrive at their destination much faster. The Northern Gateway project will also use thicker pipes with highly advanced dual leak detection systems to prevent leaks and spills. On land, these pipelines and pumping stations will be monitored 24/7 to ensure the safest level of security. All these plans and precautions will help maintain, while protecting the environment. You may not believe it from what the critics and some protesters are saying, but this project will be of great benefit to the people of Alberta and British Columbia, as well as the First Nations in these areas.
