    Harriet Tubman, known as the best conductor of the Underground Railroad, was born a slave in Dorchester County, Maryland around 1820. Harriet Tubman was born as by Araminta Ross, but later changed her name to Harriet; after his mother (Landau; 66). Like most child slaves, Harriet Tubman began working at a very young age and was often beaten for being a so-called "sneaky" child. She ended her underhanded practices when she discovered that if she were to continue, she would be sold to another plantation. She was too young to cope with it and she was well aware that once she was sold, she would never be able to see her family again. She would be forced to do whatever her new masters told her to do and if she didn't behave with them too, she would most likely be killed. A few years later, in her early teens, Harriet was struck by a two-pound bullet. its weight hurt the side of her head. Her overseer had picked it up while trying to throw it at a runaway slave and accidentally cornered Harriet instead. She never fully recovered and remained in a coma for some time (Landau; 66).
