Some felt their lives were in danger if they dared to speak out about what they had seen. One incident in particular that sparked a craze in the study of UFOs was when a flying disc reportedly crashed in the deserts of New Mexico near Roswell on the night of July 8. , 1947. According to Roswell expert Henry Ritson, many civilians arrived at the crash site and witnessed the bodies of extraterrestrial beings (Roswell Reporter p. 2). These witnesses report seeing humanoid beings with large pear-shaped heads and bulging black eyes being taken away by government and military agents and being debriefed about the entire event by these agents (Roswell Reporter p. 3 ). Some witnesses were threatened not to speak about the incident again. The object in question was later classified by the government as a weather balloon and discounted all evidence and eyewitness reports from the UFO scene (p. 3). The farmer whose field the UFO crashed into was offered a large sum of money by a local radio station to tell about it. his story on the air. He talked about strange materials and a seemingly invincible square of aluminum foil that couldn't be cut or damaged. He also described extraterrestrial beings and the craft in which they traveled (Roswell: What Are We Talking About? p. 2). He was then arrested by the army and detained at the government base. The first officer at the scene of the accident, Lt. Jesse Marcel, was asked to publicly restate the accident scene and report that he had misplaced...... in the middle of a paper.. .... example of this new technology. The controversy over aliens and the Roswell, New Mexico incident will most likely continue until aliens publicly make contact with humans or until the government admits to the cover-ups at Roswell and other UFO sightings. This accident was a very important historical event in the eyes of many, and the government did a good job keeping the details of the event secret. Whatever the item, it certainly opened the public's eyes. The people involved in the incident and those who witnessed it are the only ones who know for sure what really happened on that memorable evening. They have been silenced by the government and may never speak about the events of that night. They are the few who have seen exactly what is happening. Others may never know. Who can the American people trust? If their own government is keeping one of the most important events in human history a secret, it's unclear what else they know.
