    Teenagers should never have cosmetic surgeryIn 2012, more than 236,000 teenagers aged 13 to 19 went “under the needle” to undergo cosmetic surgery (Gilbert, Web). Teenagers should never be able to have cosmetic surgery due to the harmful effects of these procedures. Adolescent minds and bodies are not fully developed until their early 20s. Doctors are therefore unable to fully understand the risks these procedures will pose to adolescents because their bodies are still changing. It is almost impossible to predict the health risks and the effects they will have on the still developing bodies of adolescents. Teenagers who undergo cosmetic procedures do so not to appear normal, but to look better than what they think the average teenager should look like. Adolescents are unaware of the documented health risks that follow these cosmetic procedures. Even though adolescents believe they should be able to undergo these harmful procedures, they do not know the full extent of the risks they are taking and the negative effects it can have on their bodies. Cosmetic surgeries are more difficult to calculate health risks because these procedures are performed for pure pleasure and not for health reasons. With most procedures, the health risks that may arise are weighed against the expected health benefits. However, cosmetic procedures do not improve health. By definition, they are only intended to improve external physical appearance. Additionally, another factor that can change the results and effects of a procedure is how the human body will react to the surgical procedure.
