  • Essay / The Slow Food Movement - 909

The creation of the Slow Food movement took place in 1986 by a man named Carlo Petrini in response to the invasion of the fast food chain Mcdonalds in the historic Italian capital, Rome. Rome is known internationally for its gastronomy, culture and traditions. Carlo Petrini fears the fast food chain will threaten local traditions and ostracize local working-class dining establishments (Slow Food History). Petrini therefore created his own form of backlash, refraining from resorting to conventional protest tactics and strategies such as picketing, marches, and boycotts. Instead, he armed his people with a bowl of penne. Declaring: “we don’t want fast food… we want slow food!” This was the beginning of the Slow Food idea/movement that was born then. Carlo could not bear to stand idly by and watch the destruction wrought by the global industrialization of food, as well as the cultural, culinary, and social cost wrought by a homogenized diet (Slow Food History). Carlo Petrini understood that it was essential to launch an “ecological economy”. “gastronomic” in order to preserve the alternative food choices available. This movement aims for environmental sustainability and the study of culture and food, to establish the connection between the food you eat and the land that provided it (Slow Food USA). The emergence of Mcdonalds in Rome would inevitably modify the Italian Roman vision. the integrity of food culture; and that's exactly what Carlo Petrini, an Italian journalist, didn't want to happen. In the past, the first Mcdonalds was built in Rome, next to the Spanish Steps, Piazza di Spagna. Carlo Petrini was dismayed by the emergence of this infectious fast food chain in his country's capital. So he launched the “Slow Food” movement...... middle of paper ... as "supporting farmers' markets and CSAs, creating school and community gardens, and reaching out to members from different sectors of the system food in debate and common cause"Works cited"Carlo Petrini: The Slow Food gourmet who sparked a revolution."
