  • Essay / Animal Rights - 1182

"We call them stupid animals, and that's what they are, because they can't tell us what they feel, but they suffer less because they don't 'have no words."Sewelle, Anna. Black Beauty. (2000) During evolution, the animal species and the human species have evolved; Ironically, humans also take form from prehistoric animals. As our bodies and minds have evolved, we have become separated from each other on this so-called hierarchical chain. The human species, once hunters similar to Paleolithic animals, now assumes the dominant role on this planet. There are inevitably obstacles such as disease and pollution that we cannot overcome at present; Diseases and colds alone kill almost a quarter of life on this planet. JBS Haldanes, "Some Enemies of Science" (1928) persuades readers to adopt emotional rather than ethical responses regarding the ongoing struggle for the right to use animals for medical and physiological research (pp 225-230) . Regarding Mr. Haldanes' position on the issue, that rules and regulations must be met for animal experimentation, "anti vivisectionists who are against all painful or possible experiments" (1 p 227) who do not have apparently no results for science as well as the lies about pain and suffering in animals stated by anti-vivisectionists need to be clarified and made understandable. These laws and claims must be allowed and honestly told for us as a people to succeed in science. JBS Haldane's work on science has generated much controversy with animal rights and anti-vivisectionists regarding the fight against animal testing. Today, in many countries as well as in England in 1928, the process of obtaining permission to conduct animal experiments is a long and grueling process. In 1928, under the British legal code, "scientists were required to obtain a license to carry out practically painless experiments" that could only be carried out in a small number of scientific laboratories. (2 p 226) Today, in North America and England, laws are passed by the dozens regarding the use of animals, particularly the type of animal and the type of scientific experiment. Due to the proliferation of animal rights laws and the large number of anti-vivisectionist protests, scientists are excluded from a large scientific field. It can be argued that if these rules are not relaxed and procedures are kept at an average or minimum level, the science regarding the disease; which saves human lives, will therefore fall behind as we move into the future.
