  • Essay / Gender Roles in Boys and Girls by Alice Munro - 1473

Whether in the past or the present, there have always been gender roles in society. In most households, it is the wife's responsibility to take care of the house. This includes cleaning, preparing meals, raising and caring for the children as well as the husband. Compared to men who engage in more physical activities, such as gardening work. It had been known for many years that it was the woman's responsibility to stay at home while the man went off to find work to support his family. Even though the intensity of gender roles has changed, it still exists. In the short story “Boys and Girls” by Alice Munro, the author explains the transition from tomboy to womanhood. The protagonist is skeptical about becoming a young woman; she would much rather work on the farm with her father. When he asked her to do a task, it was done well because she would do anything for him. “Nevertheless, I worked willingly under his eyes and with a feeling of pride.” (774) Alongside her mother, the narrator hates working at home. Therefore, when it came to her mother, the girl thought she was plotting against her; all this to prevent him from working with his father. “She was now plotting to make me stay in the house more, even though she knew I hated it (because she knew I hated it) and to stop me from working for my father.” (775) Many would say that it was a woman's duty to work indoors because she was gentle and delicate, compared to a man's duty to work out in the yard because of his physical strength . The narrator did not know the difference between working inside the house and in the yard. All she knew was that she wanted to work outside with her father because... middle of paper... more, but she had to become something more than that. For example, she will have to work inside the house, such as cooking, cleaning, and doing laundry, compared to the work she did in the yard for her father. Ultimately, she knows what is expected of her from now on and will have to take on the responsibilities that come with it. After women fought for their rights, society changed. Despite the fact that today's society is more open-minded than it once was, there are still certain gender roles that we are judged by. Instead of women staying home to take care of the house and children while men work, it is more likely that both parents have careers and share the responsibility of taking care of the house and children . Overall, it is not fair to judge women based on the past. Today, most of them are equal to men.
