May 14, 2014Analysis of “Our Town” Our Town by Thorton Wilder is a play set in the early 1900s and was first performed without decoration. The opening of the play consists of the stage manager telling all about Grover's Corner, which is the small town where the play takes place. Wilder's intention was to make it look like any small town in the United States.Act I Daily LifeThe stage manager begins the play by telling us the date which is May 7, 1901. This alone will take you back to a time when things are bad. very different for people. He tells us a little about the townspeople, he mentions the newspaper delivery man who later died during the First World War. The state director tells us about this city and you have to imagine there was no scenery so everything you see is in your head. or imaginary. It paints a good picture and you can start to see the city. It shows the places and houses where people live and the people themselves. There are two main families, the Webbs and the Gibbs. As morning begins to dawn, the stage manager begins to introduce us to the characters and get to know them a little. The stage manager informs the audience that Mr. and Mrs. Gibb died before this scene took place. Gibbs was busy that morning, he had just given birth to twins. As Dr. Gibbs was walking home he stops and talks to the newspaper boy, his name is Joe Cromwell. We find out that Joe is very talented and probably one of the smartest kids in school, but that doesn't really matter because he would die in the war. When Dr. Gibbs comes home that morning, he is greeted by his wife with coffee. She doesn't say much, except that she would like him to talk to their son George about helping out more around the house. middle of paper ......s by Webb is not explained directly but rather by a person on stage with nothing more than words to get your imagination going and make your brain think it's all of us . . Wilder wanted to take us there and show us what he saw in his own little town. Life is very ordinary, when the time comes to do something extraordinary, you have to take it. Dreams are something everyone has, George and Emily both had them. They did not focus on themselves and instead lived according to what they knew, what was expected. If anything needs to be taken out of this room it would be to not let the opportunity pass you by, this may be your only chance to make it happen. Life in “Our Town” reminds everyone that life is a gift, it should be taken each day as if it were the last. We all live in "our town", George and Emily's life is no different from today..
