    Beddow repeatedly stated that Fosse had a certain quality about him that made his dancers feel that they would do anything for him. Fosse showed his dancers that they could push beyond their limits and do more than they thought they could before. People were also amazed by Fosse's ability to create characters. Fosse was one of the first choreographers/directors to give ensemble dancers each a different character from which they could extract movement quality. In addition to building characters, he would also have subtext for everything in his choreography. By trying to describe the quality Fosse was looking for in a certain step, he was creating an image for the dancers to work from the execution of that step. Because Fosse was so particular about how his moves were executed, his choreography was much more difficult than it appeared. Margery Beddow also noted that Fosse's audition process was the fairest and most organized she had ever participated in. She explained that Fosse would teach three different combinations to the dancers, then grade each dancer on each combination on a scale from A to E.
