  • Essay / The reversal of roles between Macbeth and Lady Macbeth

In Shakespeare's play Macbeth, the way of thinking of Macbeth and Lady Macbeth is reversed. The three witches are the main reason for this. They told Macbeth and his trusted friend, Banquo, that he would be the Thane of Glamis, which he already is, the Thane of Cawdor and the King of Scotland. Banquo was told he would father kings. They were both skeptical of these prophecies, but once Macbeth soon became Thane of Cawdor, he began to believe what the witches told him. Once he sees Lady Macbeth, after she is informed of this news, they immediately conclude that they must kill the King of Scotland, Duncan, even though the prophecy does not mention any such thing. although she is quick to act, she is also skeptical about it and says, “Yet I fear your nature; it is too full of the milk of human kindness to be able to catch it by the nearest route” (p. 31). The debate over whether or not to kill Duncan was where their true colors were shown. Lady Macbeth's and Macbeth's personalities change over the course of the play, their similarities begin to emerge, and in the end, guilt dominates both of them. Over the course of the play, the personalities of Lady Macbeth and Macbeth come and go. At the beginning of the play, Lady Macbeth was cruel, controlling, and very persuasive. On the other hand, Macbeth was not man enough for his wife, had good human nature and was a hero. Lady Macbeth is the reason Macbeth killed Duncan. She said to Macbeth: “What beast was it?” So, that made you break up this business? When you dared to do it, then you were a man. » (p. 43) She believes he is a man when he kills Duncan and he thinks he is a man for not killing him. She says this to try to convince him to commit this terrible act. The only thing that interested him... middle of paper ....... They changed roles during the play. They both had innocent and evil times, but each were at different times in their lives. Lady Macbeth and Macbeth's personalities may be very different, but they are also very similar. They both made terrible mistakes that ruined their lives. These errors were the murder of Duncan, by Macbeth, but influenced by Lady Macbeth and the murder of Banquo, the Macduff family and young Siward. It was Macbeth who killed these people. They were his own ideas and he didn't even question what he was doing. In the end, they both died a painful death. Not as painful physically, but emotionally. Macbeth was corrupted by Lady Macbeth and ultimately made this play a tragedy. Works cited by Shakespeare, Willaim and Aaron Durband. Macbeth. Shakespeare made easy. Hauppagem, NY: Barron, 2004.
